The important subject of Early Childhood Education has to do with both economics and health. I strongly recommend Glenn Doman's books "How To Teach Your Baby To Read" and "How To Teach Your Baby Math."
The basic principle is that young brains are not developed enough to deal with abstract concepts. Keep it simple. The letters A, B, and C are abstract concepts as well as the phonics associated with them. Show the word ELEPHANT and say the word. This admittedly is simple sight reading. The individual letters and sounds can be learned later,
The Math Program is the ultimate application of this concept. There are poster board cards, 11 x 11 inches with one 1/2 inch red Avery label dot on the first card, two on the second and so on, You can show the card #2 and say TWO, and then the card #3 and say PLUS 3, and show the card #5 and say EQUALS 5, and the child can literally SEE IT,
If you start early, you will not only have a lot of fun but you will be shocked with what can be accomplished. My daughter read her first book at 24 months of age. I taught her cursive at 3 1/2 and she read her first adult novel "Santa Claus: The Movie" which was 244 pages at 4 1/2 years old. She was at the top of her class through college.
